FAQ

A list of commonly asked questions. If you have any questions that haven’t been answered here, feel free to chuck an e-mail my way.

What do you use to create your artworks?

Photoshop CS4 and a 4×6 wacom bamboo fun tablet. My digital art is usually 100% digital, from sketch to final product. As for traditional… normal/watercolour Derwent pencils, white-out. mechanical pencils, pen and highlighters are the most common mediums I use. I’ve never had a lot of money to buy paints and things, so I adapted to using what was in my pencilcase at school.

How do you come up with creature/character designs?

I think of a character’s personality and then take random traits from random animals that appeal to me. I never label my characters or creatures as, say, “part jackal/part lizard”; I find this thinking pattern only limits the possibilities. To be honest I don’t even know what animal traits my characters and creatures have adopted, all I know is I’ve seen them on something at some point in my life and I’ve made a mental note of it. I think the biggest mistake any artist can make is thinking too much.

How long did it take you to find your ‘artistic style’? Are you ever dissatisfied with your style? Did you ‘mock’ someone else’s style to find your own?

I’m constantly finding my artistic style. I never stop trying new things, if I do I’ll stagnate. I suppose that’s the only thing I’m dissatisfied with- my art is all over the place, sometimes I feel like I have absolutely no style at all, or rather…lots of styles!
I never purposely copied anyone, but I was much more heavily influenced when I started out. Everyone copies at that point though- intentional or not.
