“Out of sight and out of mind are deadly traits when they’re combined.”

In a way Vaughan represents nostalgia, and he’s a medium with which I can keep old friends and memories close, as you’ll see in my personal art.  Vaughan is the only character that hasn’t undergone some kind of major change, personality or design orientated, too.

I’m not sure exactly when he first made an appearance, I scribbled him a lot on my school notes and never really made him a character until much later.

Personality

Vaughan is a lone soul. His entire life he’s spent doing things for himself, and himself only. He’s determined, self-sufficient and independent, and holds no sentimental value to anything. He doesn’t clutter his space with possessions or people, instead he saves it for things of some practical value.

He’s incredibly bright though a bit of a snob; he doesn’t share his intellect often, making him appear shy or even dim-witted. He has impeccable manners but more for the sake of tradition. He’ll pull your chair out for you, hold open doors, and pour your drinks; but he doesn’t really care. That’s not to say he’s incapable of it.

Vaughan is a very artificial, selfish and prudent man. Despite his sometimes snappy and always cold demeanor, he doesn’t mean any harm to anyone.

Character History from Birth to Moment in Story

0-5
Vaughan had a very inquisitive and troublesome nature, always touching things and pulling them apart. Starts Primary School locally at age 5.

6-10
He was very social and he showed excellence in every subject he touched, whether it was sports, science or music. He was naturally more interested in science; the mechanics of things fed his questioning nature. He played a lot of videogames and spent a lot of time on the computer his parents gave him. They were important, busy people, and bought him a lot of technological toys to keep him preoccupied.

He met a girl called Sarukah; they spent a lot of time together, seeing as they both had well-to-do parents and were brought up with the same ideals and values.

11-15
School continues to go well for Vaughan. He attained awards of excellence and joined the Choir to fill his lunchtimes with something productive. Once he enters High School at age 13, he finds a group of  close, reliable friends to sit with and Sarukah joins him. His group doesn’t change throughout his Tertiary education, and while he doesn’t get close to many of them, it was just a place for him to fill time with his peers. He found their company comforting.

16-20
Vaughan enters a relationship with Elizabeth, the only close friend from his group, at sixteen years of age. They Marry at eighteen, not long after they finish High School, and their first child is born when they are Nineteen years old- Jamie.  By that point, Vaughan had been in Medical School for a year, and had moved out with his wife. Eliza was a committed to being a full-time mum.

21-25
Vaughan attains employment at a local restaurant to help pay for rent, and to support their growing family. His parents assist him with these costs as well. A second child is born, named Ashley, and two years later when Vaughan is Twenty three years of age a third child is brought into the family- Adrian.

26-30
Vaughan lacks a social life, he’s unable to indulge in hobbies, and all his time is devoted to his children and school so that his studies don’t falter. His parents often visit to help him take care of the little terrors. At age twenty eight, a fourth child is born. They named her Alexander.

He completes Medical School at age twenty eight, quits his job as a waiter, and starts full time work as an ER surgeon.

31-35
The volatile hours of Vaughan’s new job coupled with the children means his sleep patterns suffer dramatically. He’s too exhausted to care for the kids most nights, and has his parents take over until he adjusts to this new atmosphere. Lastly, a fifth child is born, Julian, when Vaughan is thirty four years of age.

Eliza had too been suffering. For the past couple of years Vaughan noticed she was in ill health and her moods dipped a lot. He did his best to take care of her- not suspecting anything malicious. Finally, when Vaughan is thirty five years of age, she dies of a brain tumour that went undiscovered for years. He gave his children to Elizabeth’s mother for care, and would visit them whenever he had spare time.

36-40
Vaughan quit his job as an ER surgeon when he was thirty seven. After Elizabeth’s death, he lost passion for the work, and in ways blamed himself for being too busy to notice her being unwell.  Bored with his life, he returns work at the restaurant working full time, so he could raise some more money towards building his own church.

Vaughan notices a tall, almost albino man dining at his restaurant. He was sitting alone which Vaughan thought odd; so he made smalltalk with him to inspect the man. They got along really well, and being a quiet night, Vaughan had the chance to get to know him. His name was Dimitri. Vaughan mentioned the Church he wanted to begin, and Dimitri being just as bored and lost as Vaughan was, decided to help him achieve his goals.

A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into the building process- and not to mention, a lot of money. Vaughan had it built on land his parents owned not far from his home.  It took two years of flat-out work, done by the builders they employed.  At which point they started accepting members.

Because Vaughan’s family was so powerful, they had no trouble recruiting. Every Church in their world has an army, and so most of those interested wanted to join for militant purposes.

During their time organizing and preparing, Vaughan’s old highschool friend Sarukah had also started her own church. They hadn’t talked much since High School ended, and bitter at him for defying her bloodline’s religion, she tried to run him off course. It started with simple, harmless remarks- asking him if this was what he really wanted to do, if he thought it was righteous. Then it escalated into things of a much more vicious nature. She’d sent soldiers to vandalize their church, spy on their conferences, and try to convert their members. Vaughan confronted her and ordered her to stop the harassment. Frustrated that nothing seemed to make them budge, Sarukah sent one of her most trained assassins to murder their High-Priest.

41-45
The murder of Vaughan’s High-Priest wasn’t a shock to him. He knew how Vindictive and persistent Sarukah was, and knew the only thing that would stop her was to declare war and win. A year later he sent his soldiers to do the same as she’d done to his forces. Sarukah called Sacrilege, and Vaughan called war. He asks a twenty-five year old Dimitri to join him as his second in command; Dimitri declines, and Vaughan gives him a Glasgow Grin as punishment and eternal proof of his betrayal before banishing him from his holy grounds.

Both parties of the war had very important parents in high places- both parties pulled in a lot more support than expected, causing it to escalate into the third world war their planet had experienced.

46-50

The war ends with Vaughan’s side having seen defeat. He knew it was best to surrender; most his troops were dead and he didn’t want to cause so much catastrophe. Sarukah has Vaughan drowned in a lake not far from his church. She orders her troops to leave him there before seeing to it that he was dead, hoping that he’d escape and somehow survive- which he did.

At fourty seven years of age he spends most his time keeping in contact with his family and trying to get his life back on track.  He lives in the ruins of his church, within his living quarters, that stayed intact. He has his children, parents and in-laws visit to keep him company. He’s able to go out in public without too much ill speak about him but unless it’s for food or to send letters he avoids it.

Finally Vaughan passes away at fifty years of age, of unknown causes. Contrary all that happened he was content with what he’d achieved and despite the rumors, his family don’t believe that he willed himself to die out of depression.

Typical Day in the Life of Vaughan

He was a private man; he read frequently, and didn’t do a whole lot of much else. He spent more time listening than talking, and enjoyed having a glass of wine with his parents, in-laws and wife. His years were always busy with work or study but he seldom spoke about it. He enjoyed keeping busy and contributing to the world in one way or another- to feel useful somehow. It gave his life purpose.
